I have always felt a connection to Africa and wanted to help in some way, but never knew where to start or what to do. After a friend introduced me to GuluWalk, a Toronto Based organization, and the documentary Uganda Rising, I was so greatly moved by the present day atrocities depicted in the war-torn region of Northern Uganda that I decided I wanted to get involved.

Northern Uganda has been ignored by the international community for far too long.  There are over 800,000 people displaced, 50,000 abducted that can be accounted for, Over 25,000 are made up of children.  The organization is the LRA (Lords Resistance Army.  Their target, 5 to 12 year olds.  Their reasoning: Big enough to carry guns, small enough to sneak into school to steal new children.

Recently, my passion for Uganda has become more intense. I have contacted GuluWalk to see how we can work together. GuluWalk is focused on supporting the abandoned Acholi children of northern Uganda, who have lost their families to the brutal civil war that plagues this region. GuluWalk, in partnership with other organizations in northern Uganda, funds many crucial projects such as youth health initiatives, development of activities that empower and promote community peace building among youth, and supporting educational opportunities. While there is progress, peace still eludes the Acholi of northern Uganda and only together can we make a difference in what former U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland called "the world's most neglected humanitarian crisis" and "one of the biggest scandals of our generation."

GuluWalk is a Toronto based organization and has been operating since July of 2005.  It began through the vision and humanitarian efforts of just two people, Adrian Bradbury and Kieran Hayward.  Through their hard work, GuluWalk has grown into a worlwide movement for peace and has been featured in many media outlets all over the world.  It is no longer an effort by just these two founders, but is now made possible by the support of many volunteers and partner organizations worldwide who have taken to the cause.

The last GuluWalk Day took place on Saturday, October 20, 2007.  Over 30,000 showed up in 100 cities in 16 countries around the world and raised $500,000 for the abandoned Acholi children of northern Uganda.  Since the charity was created in 2005, GuluWalk has raised over $1 million for the children of northern Uganda.  With this money, GuluWalk is able to assist many programs and initiatives established in northern Uganda.  To read more about these programs, visit the GuluWalk website.
